The aim of these modules is to give you, as a Young Leader, a basic understanding of the different behaviours that young people can display and some possible causes. Also to create an environment that is inclusive and welcoming for all young people.

Case Study 1
Reasons
 
  • Anxiety, low self-esteem and fear of trying new things.
Responses
 
  • Be less harsh on the lad. If you’re not that harsh anyway, try and talk to him in another room. Make sure he’s calm before he speaks, because if he is not calm he may get more agitated. Talk to him about what you can, and based on that, make a decision on what to do for him.
Case Study 2
Reasons
 
  • She could be having family problems, or attention deficit.
Responses
 
  • Either way, in a separate area, talk to Louise about it. She doesn’t have to remark, just let her think about what you are trying to get across. If it is family problems, ask her what it is. Again, she doesn’t have to remark. Based on any remark made, say something comforting like “you can talk to me”. If it is just an attention deficit, consult a specialist and implement changes accordingly.
Case Study 3
Reasons
 
  • Strong possibility of being bullied at school.
Responses
 
  • Talk to Sanjay and/or his parents about it.
Case Study 4
Reasons
 
  • It could be that she wants to do her best and make others proud, but doesn’t quite know how. Or she might have a short attention span.
Responses
 
  • Help her focus. Like teaching her to ride a bicycle, let go when she focuses most.
Case Study 5
Reasons
 
  • Transitions can be hard on people, especially if they have Autism. But, it could be that there was some bullying that just happened to start at school the moment of transition, or a family problem.
Responses
 
  • One-to-one talks can really help in these situations. Ask some questions that he feels comfortable answering. Also, talk to the parents if you believe it is bullying.
