Young Leader Training Modules

Explorer Scout Young Leaders undertake 11 modules as part of their training.

Explorer Scout Young Leaders and Young Leaders volunteering from outside of scouting must complete module A within 3 months.

The modules are designed to be flexible and encourage innovation, so be as creative as you can! As long as the aim and objectives are met, they can be delivered in any way by anybody with the appropriate training or experience.

The modules can be accessed in a range of ways:

  • Face to face evening sessions or weekend training modules
  • Sessions via Zoom
  • Hampshire Scouts e-learning
  • Young Leader training online (independent study) by Belfast, Braid & Pentland YLs

All the information about delivery of the modules can be found in the Preparing to Lead delivery book, linked in the Course Materials.

Module G – What is a high quality programme? p58-63

This module aims to provide YLs with the knowledge of what a high quality, balanced programme is and looks like for the section support. It will help them to understand how awards and badges help to achieve this. Module H – Programme planning p 64-66

This module aims to provide YLs with the skills and understanding necessary to plan and run a balanced programme for their section over a three-month period.

Module I – What did they say? p67-69

Module J – Communicate it! p70-74

This module aims to make YLs aware of the importance of different communication styles and the impact that the way they communicate has on others. It will look at how they can adapt your style to suit your audience, whether you are in section meetings or leader meetings. It will also look at how to talk about the skills you are gaining through the YL scheme whenever talking to other people both inside and outside of Scouting.

Module K – First aid masterclass

This module aims to ensure that ESYLs have the understanding and skills to take action in an emergency situation. Training in emergency response is becoming an essential requirement for many jobs and courses. These skills are invaluable for ESYLs. That’s why training in emergency aid is part of the Scheme. Given the wide availability of training courses in first and emergency aid, ESYLs complete this module by attending a recognised training course.
